Warbirds
The famous fighters & bombers of WWII. Carving these aircraft has been a long term project of mine.
It began with development of 1:40 scale drawings of each of the aircraft. Then these drawings were
adapted to a block design that is suitable for carving. This took several interations so end grain of the
wood was minimized at the block junctions. The Warbird pages give the details and pictures of finished carvings.
Dolphins & Whales
The smooth lines of our seafaring cousins allow carvings to display beauty of the wood and the animal's gracefull lines.
At this time I have carved only dolphins and beluga whales. The wood has been walnut & maple for the dophins and
maple & walnut for the beluga whales. Finish on these has been three coats of sanding sealer ans two of satin polyurethane.
Cowboys
Near 10 years ago, I purchased a book "Carving Cowboys" by Claude W. Bolton. The carvings I have made started with
his basic design, each evolved into its own being. These have all been rough in nature with the knife cuts plainly visible.
The finish has been with brown shoe polish. Of course I gave them all away and I took no pictures, but that will change.
Scandinavian Carvings
"Woodcarving in the Scandinavian Style" by Harley Refsal and his second book "Carving Trolls and Other
Scandinavian-Style Characters" have launched me into my next step in carving. After moving back to northern
Minnesota where people don't look funny at you if you say "Uff Da", some people may enjoy some of these carvings.
I am NOW going to learn how to paint.
